First time with markers.

Okay, some test colours for the bad guy. This is my first time working with markers, so please forgive the fact that this isn't awesome!

I used Pantone markers for this, which are an alcohol-based professional quality set of markers, and they're quite expensive. Think AU$60 (roughly US$45) for a box of 6! We've got 5 boxes so far, heh.

Alas, I don't yet have as many colours as I'd like, and the guy's hair turned out a bit orange. He'll have darker brown hair in the comic, but maybe blonde. Not sure yet.

Anyway, I hope you dig it! The final colours in the actual cover will be much nicer, I hope. This is all practice. :)

Spider-Man inked.

The most awesomest thing about this piece is simply the fact that I don't even like Spider-Man. I mean, I saw the movies, and I enjoyed the movies, but my appreciation for Spidey has never gone beyond that. I always found that the comics spent too much time devoting every other line to some witty wisecrack. My buddy James assures me that there's much more to this book than that, and that I'm missing out a wealth of exciting and compelling tales, but man, screw that guy! I kid, he's a good lad.

So what we have here is my impression of Spider-Man. I've made a couple of changes here and there, and I haven't bothered to draw the webbing - frankly it was enough that I even drew him at all, let alone go to those sorta lengths. I'm not even sure how I ended up drawing him at all. I was just sketching some random pose, and some deepdown unloved part of my brain decided it was very Spidey-like, and the next thing I know I'm freaking inking the thing. Damn you Parker!

Here's an "in progress" shot. I often start inking certain parts of my drawings even before the sketch itself is finished, simply to keep me motivated and to push myself through to completion.

Nailed it.

It's such a good, and annoyingly rare feeling when I nail a drawing. I really, really like how this one turned out. Lately, I'm trying really hard to break out of my comfort zone. I tend to do all my drawings around a specific series of poses, and they're generally all 3/4 or front-on. Hopefully this piece demonstrates that I can draw something a little more creative!
