It's the Easter long weekend here in Australia (we get the Friday and the Monday off, so it's 4 days of bliss for moi), so I thought I'd waste an evening doing another illustration. Hopefully I'll get a chance to colour it in the next week or so!
Every now and then, I like to point out that most of my illustrative work these days - at least the stuff that is vaguely anatomically correct - is from photo reference. I point it out purely because I feel awkward when people compliment me for my work, under the impression that it's 100% mine. And it's simply not. Illustration isn't something I have enough time in my life to focus on, and I'm simply not going to spend what little time I have available on learning foreshortening and perspective and all that other wonderful jazz. For me, it's all about the end product - not how I arrived at it. And as far as I'm concerned, most of the time my end product is unique enough in its own right that the methods I used to get there are, well, not irrelevant, but certainly not important to me.
Here's the grabs I threw together to create a starting point.
So there you are. I hope you enjoy my work, and I hope you'll be as carefree about my methods as I am.
Haha, I rhymed it up hot.
Here's a girl I sketched recently. I think I posted the sketch here, but don't hold me to that. Anyway, I got a little bored this morning, and decided to throw some colour on it. I'd only saved a small version, so it was a bit challenging, but I think it looks okay. Heck, it's only a colour study anyway. If I get the final version done and inked, this will stand as a good bit of experimenting.
Right on.
I did this today, instead of working. And yeah, it's from photo reference. My life-like stuff always is, haha. Me, learn to draw life-like without photo ref? HA!
I did it completely in Photoshop, courtesy of my tiny little Wacom Graphire3. Oh how I wish I was still at the studio that had me using a gigantic Intuos3 every day!
A good friend of mine works as the barman at a small, laid-back local Tiki lounge run out of the back of a dance studio. It's very, very cool. I feel superior just being there.
One dude I met there last weekend is a mechanic who works on fuel injectors or something. But on the topic, he's also an artist. As of next week, he'll be displaying some of his works - tiki-oriented works - at the lounge and will be offering them for AU$350 a piece. That's a lot of dosh. I've never seen his work, but heck, a lot of stuff at Outre Gallery in Melbourne can be had for less than that, and the stuff there is phenomenal. So he's either out of his tree, or amazing! I guess I'll find out when I check out his work next week.
I don't plan on following in his footsteps - though who's to say if it'll happen - but I did get inspired by the idea today and started sketching a very quick doodle of a witch doctor offering some little skull flowers to, well, probably a hula girl. Here's hoping it rules! If I bother to finish it, haha.
I've always been extremely jealous of Piro and her friends and the regular gatherings they have for drawing and such, called Hayase. Very jealous! I don't know of anything similar in Melbourne, and that's always annoyed me. There are thousands of illustrators calling Melbourne home, so why isn't there something like Hayase down here? So, I've tried to start one myself. I'm definitely not running the show - really I don't think there's anything to "run", the way I'm hoping it'll happen - but I figure someone's got to get the ball rolling, right?
So if you're a Melbournite illustrator lurking around Vox or wherever, check out the forum and come to a session!
I just stabbed myself in the thumb with non-repro blue lead. I wonder if I can die from that? What's it even made from? Polymer or something? How do you draw with polymer? Damn you, science!
Loh and I are on the move again, deciding just over a month ago to move out of the house that we've been sharing with another couple. They're going overseas, so we figured we'd move out of the city and back to the 'burbs so Loh will be closer to her work. I work from home, so it's no biggy for myself. Anyway, we've had a hard time finding a place with cool people. I mean, not cool as in sports jocks, but cool as in geeky. Geeky like us! Folks who love movies, music, cartoons, video games, et cetera. Come on, they've gotta be out there somewhere!
So we've decided that I'll draw/design an A4-sized ad for us, and then we'll staple it to the bulletin boards in local music and video stores, and maybe the local supermarket too. I dunno, I haven't thought that far into it yet, haha.
So anyway this is what I've got so far. Loh will be on the left somewhere, making a silly face or doing something with her board, I dunno. Incidentally, how awesome is my Pucca pencil!
Lorien and I stumbled across a rad little toy store a couple of months ago, on the way to her work. We finally got around to dropping in, and their prices are brilliant! So much cheaper than any other store I've been to. They sell anime toys and such, but also a great bunch of vintage Eastern and Western toys as well. Unfortunately, they're mega smalltime and I'm worried they might not succeed. They're not in an area that I'd consider particularly suited to their products, so I hope they can do well.
Anyway, I offered to design a logo for them, for free. They were ecstatic! Because of their location, I want the logo to be as outspoken and attention-grabbing as possible. Also, because they sell both Eastern and Western toys, I wanted to include both themes.
This is merely the first stage of the logo, I'm actually going to vector this and make it super crisp. Should be damn nice if the image I've got in my head is the one that ends up on the page!
