It's the Easter long weekend here in Australia (we get the Friday and the Monday off, so it's 4 days of bliss for moi), so I thought I'd waste an evening doing another illustration. Hopefully I'll get a chance to colour it in the next week or so!
Every now and then, I like to point out that most of my illustrative work these days - at least the stuff that is vaguely anatomically correct - is from photo reference. I point it out purely because I feel awkward when people compliment me for my work, under the impression that it's 100% mine. And it's simply not. Illustration isn't something I have enough time in my life to focus on, and I'm simply not going to spend what little time I have available on learning foreshortening and perspective and all that other wonderful jazz. For me, it's all about the end product - not how I arrived at it. And as far as I'm concerned, most of the time my end product is unique enough in its own right that the methods I used to get there are, well, not irrelevant, but certainly not important to me.
Here's the grabs I threw together to create a starting point.
So there you are. I hope you enjoy my work, and I hope you'll be as carefree about my methods as I am.
Fi's making some great progress with the painting, especially considering we've probably had a total of 24-30 hours worth of actual working hours to devote to it. I'm quite proud of the effort she's made so far. She doesn't get to paint very often, so even though she'd be entitled to being rusty and out of touch with her skills, she's really doing a great job with this. I think our friend is going to be very pleased with this birthday gift!
Lorien and I stumbled across a rad little toy store a couple of months ago, on the way to her work. We finally got around to dropping in, and their prices are brilliant! So much cheaper than any other store I've been to. They sell anime toys and such, but also a great bunch of vintage Eastern and Western toys as well. Unfortunately, they're mega smalltime and I'm worried they might not succeed. They're not in an area that I'd consider particularly suited to their products, so I hope they can do well.
Anyway, I offered to design a logo for them, for free. They were ecstatic! Because of their location, I want the logo to be as outspoken and attention-grabbing as possible. Also, because they sell both Eastern and Western toys, I wanted to include both themes.
This is merely the first stage of the logo, I'm actually going to vector this and make it super crisp. Should be damn nice if the image I've got in my head is the one that ends up on the page!
Lately I've been trying to expand my print portfolio, so when a friend asked me how much I'd want to design an A2-sized full colour "going away" poster for a workmate of his who is leaving to join the police force, I said "Mate, just cover my beers the next time we go out!" and then I got busy on it.
Because he's off to join the police force, I thought it'd be funny to have him in a mugshot. This way, we get his head to be nice and big on the poster, and the piece still has a point to it. For my own personal laughs, I used Hugh Grant's body from his mugshot when he got arrested for his *ahem* intimate encounter with one Divine Brown. From that point on, I expanded it to include a crime scene, and give it that old pulpy feel with the "Did Officer Hosie Do It?!" text and so forth.
I'm pretty happy with the art, but I do still want to work on the text. I like it, quite a bit actually, but I do think it could be better and I think I'll try a few different fonts.
And here we are, mere hours later, with some pretty-much-finished inks for my NK Patrol piece. I'll beg and plead for Loh to print them out for me at work tomorrow, in A3 size, and if she loves me she damn well will. Hah!
I used Paul Pope (and another good link) as my inspiration for this piece, and really, who wouldn't? The man's amazing.
I have the most irritating pain in my ribs on the right side, that I can only relieve by leaning back in my chair. Which, you know, makes it damn hard to draw. I'd see a doctor, but... I don't wanna. It'll pass. I have Wolverine's healing powers, only mine take days to work instead of seconds.
For your viewing pleasure (or complete lack thereof), I offer the completed inks of Ryu schooling Ken. I'd like to eventually do a more complete version of this and paint it, but in the meantime, I quite like this. I screwed up Ken's feet, but if you pretend not to notice, the rest of it is kind of alright. Non?
