A good friend of mine works as the barman at a small, laid-back local Tiki lounge run out of the back of a dance studio. It's very, very cool. I feel superior just being there.
One dude I met there last weekend is a mechanic who works on fuel injectors or something. But on the topic, he's also an artist. As of next week, he'll be displaying some of his works - tiki-oriented works - at the lounge and will be offering them for AU$350 a piece. That's a lot of dosh. I've never seen his work, but heck, a lot of stuff at Outre Gallery in Melbourne can be had for less than that, and the stuff there is phenomenal. So he's either out of his tree, or amazing! I guess I'll find out when I check out his work next week.
I don't plan on following in his footsteps - though who's to say if it'll happen - but I did get inspired by the idea today and started sketching a very quick doodle of a witch doctor offering some little skull flowers to, well, probably a hula girl. Here's hoping it rules! If I bother to finish it, haha.
I just stabbed myself in the thumb with non-repro blue lead. I wonder if I can die from that? What's it even made from? Polymer or something? How do you draw with polymer? Damn you, science!
Loh and I are on the move again, deciding just over a month ago to move out of the house that we've been sharing with another couple. They're going overseas, so we figured we'd move out of the city and back to the 'burbs so Loh will be closer to her work. I work from home, so it's no biggy for myself. Anyway, we've had a hard time finding a place with cool people. I mean, not cool as in sports jocks, but cool as in geeky. Geeky like us! Folks who love movies, music, cartoons, video games, et cetera. Come on, they've gotta be out there somewhere!
So we've decided that I'll draw/design an A4-sized ad for us, and then we'll staple it to the bulletin boards in local music and video stores, and maybe the local supermarket too. I dunno, I haven't thought that far into it yet, haha.
So anyway this is what I've got so far. Loh will be on the left somewhere, making a silly face or doing something with her board, I dunno. Incidentally, how awesome is my Pucca pencil!
Woosh! Long time between posts, huh. Alas, 'tis the season to be lazy. Incidentally, a Happy Festivus to alla y'all!
So okay, here's a new sketchoodle.
I used photo reference for this one, as I've been doing a lot lately. Here's a quick Photoshopped merge of the two photos that I went with. The dude is a photo the guy himself posted on a design forum I sometimes frequent, and the bird is some anime fan cosplaying the day away, by the looks of it. Google Images is a wonder.
Both of the guns look pretty bad right now; I kind of forgot to finish those off before scanning the sketch. That's okay though, I'll tweak those a bit before this piece goes to ink. I'm not 100% happy with the girl's torso; it's very bare down the centre. I wanted her to have smallish breasts, so I can't just go filling the space by squeezing her wee boobs together. I'll come up with something. Or maybe I'll just leave it. I dunno. What do you think?
Something something. Anyway, here's a sketch I just put in the scan box. The base is photo reference (pose and general anatomy, nail polish bottle), and the rest is me (hair style, clothing, electrical stuff, et cetera).
This girl might be a hardcore gamer from a future that has returned to the Powerglove, but she's still got time to be pretty for the boys and girls. Aaah sexism, is there anything it can't do?
Next stop, inksville!
